When hitting a brick wall in my family history I often put the person's name into google to see what shows up as a random stab in the dark. Most of the time nothing happens but when I click on the book section of Google I find myself getting some valuable information from old books that have been digitized. It's pretty cool. Here's an example.
Person's name in google, hit search, then go to the More tab and click to pull down the menu and click Books. Pretty easy. A list of books that Google has indexed appears.
Then I search the entries for anyone that could be in the area or dates for my person. Click on the book and sometimes they will be digitized and fully readable - sometimes they will not be digitized but the book title and small excerpts with information will help with further searches. Most of my successes have been in early county histories listing families that settled the areas of interest. Next week I will show you more sources for county histories besides Google books - but try a modern twist on an old book search today to see if anything helps! -- Catrina
