Salted Caramel Sauce

As promised, here is the amazing Salted Caramel Sauce from Sally's Baking Addiction but with pictures on the part that makes making caramel tricky... hopefully the visuals help.

This makes 1 cup of sauce and takes about 10 minutes.  You will need the these ingredients.

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 Tablespoons salted butter, cut up into 6 pieces
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt (I only do a pinch as I think a whole teaspoon tastes too salty)

Heat the sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat...stir with a heat resistant spatula, wooden spoon, or whisk.

Sugar will form clumps and eventually melt into a thick dark brown colored liquid.   Stir constantly through this and do not try to hurry this along by turning the burner up. It will cause a burned taste to your sugar and ruin the whole batch.

Once sugar is completely melted add the butter.  I always cut this butter up before since you have to stir the whole time the sugar is on the heat.  Be careful while dropping the butter in as it will bubble rapidly and spurt slightly.  Stir the butter until it is completely melted,

Very slowly drizzle in 1/2 cup of heavy cream while stirring.  More sputtering and splattering will occur.

Boil for 1 minute.  

Remove from heat and stir in the salt.  Allow to cool before using.
